Adolescent & Teen Therapy

“The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Why Adolescent and Teen Therapy?

Adolescents, or teens, are growing young adults. At this stage of development teens are focused on building social skills, developing independence and autonomy from parents and caregivers, and understanding their own identity. This is a huge time for growth and change and it can be challenging as teens assert their independence and parents try to find a healthy balance to ensure their safety.

I provide an atmosphere in which teens can feel safe in disclosing their struggles while exploring their identity and parents can feel relieved knowing that their teen’s mental health needs and safety are being addressed.

Areas of specialty when working with teens:

  • Providing strategies to reduce anxiety, stress, depression, hopelessness, or self-doubt
  • Motivating teens to find safe, healthy coping skills to replace unhealthy coping skills such as drug or alcohol abuse, self-harm behaviors, and sexual acting out
  • Assisting teens to improve self-esteem and gaining a sense of belonging, competence and responsibility
  • Guiding teens in learning how to manage anger or control impulsive behavior
  • Working with teens to learn how to cope with traumatic events such as death of a loved one or physical/sexual abuse or neglect
  • Helping teens learn to express themselves appropriately and to improve communication
  • Supporting teens in learning how to manage difficult changes in the family or community
  • Providing teens with renewed hope and optimism

With so many temptations and choices, a teen can benefit from help to sort through feelings, values, and goals with guidance from a compassionate and knowledgeable therapist.
